Idealism is what preceeds experience; cynicism is what follows. - D. Wolf

Boy, isn't that true! http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?ColorForthQuickStart

I personally have a lot of experience with colorForth. So, where is my cynicism? Shouldn't I have caught up to the people that are cynical about colorForth by now?

I mean, there are people that I talk to that have never used the colorForth system, but already they can pick out the problems. They( who are they?) tend to have more experience then I, as programmers. Whether it be a Forth, or really any other language, typically C based, those 'they' can look through Chuck's/Jeff Fox's sites and make an opinion about something 'they' have never used. All be it with some level of accuracy. In this way they have excused themselves from trying something… what old? … new? both? Yes, both. The old is new again.

Bytecode systems have existed for a very long time.
Some have proven to be bad example systems.
Read as: BASIC and the like. Are we not past this idea?
It's not really Shannon/Huffman because if it were it
would re-compile the list of character usage everytime
the system re-compiled. At least for best compression.
Moded keyboards have proven their worth themselves in
many editors that people use, good or bad.
Depends on the person.
Read: vim vs. Emacs vs. whatever you personally use.

One person in the Forth world that I respect says that…

"this is a throwback to the past of Forth and computing
and didn't we just do away with all of that?"

What ever 'that' is. Of course, my response to that idea is…

"Why did we 'fix' what ain't broke?"

I could go on and on about the cynical overview. Instead, I leave that as an exercise for the reader. As a colorForth programmer you will run into these people.

A conversation recently ( mid 2008) in the mailinglist that questions how to compare colorForth to other systems flips from 'no comparison possible' to a comparison with every system at every level.

What ever the opinion, people introduced to colorForth tend to have one.

I also think that Chuck's/Jeff's sites are on the side of idealistic. Well, wouldn't they have to be? After all, they are using these systems with proof of success in what they are trying to accomplish. Even just as justification for using the system, they would have to be on the optomistic side. Hard to sell a product if no one likes the tools it is built with. Especially the builders.

I found this sort of funny. After running across the http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?ColorForth colorForth description, and reading all of it, I decided that what was needed was an entry from an actual user. Someone with real experience using the system on a regular basis. Read: ME! :-) But what happened. Surprise Surprise, most likely some non-user has moved my entry to another page. I have been relegated to the sideline, for what ever reason. Someone else's opinion.

At first I was a tad hurt. Apparently, enough to write about it permenantly here. Now not so. I like being on a page where only users have said anything at all. And believe me, I know that my personal opinion might be a bit plebian, novice as far as being a programmer in the commercial world's perspective…

http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?ColorForthQuickStart ←- an overview. I'm going to use that as my overview opinion.
